Local Fish Species

Listed below are some of the more common species found in our Yankeetown, Crystal River, Homosassa, Big Bend and Nature Coast Offshore and Nearshore  waters with links to expanded information and fishing regulations.  These fish are the principal species we catch when fishing the water of Homosassa.

Big Bend Inshore Fishing

The Sea Trout is perhaps the most common fish caught while fishing the inshore waters of the Big Bend.  Redfish are actively sought and exists in abundance in the flats of this area.  While fishing for these two species, it is very likely you will encounter ladyfish (my favorite on light tackle), Jack Crevalle (another favorite on light tackle), pompano (great eating), black drum, flounder, Snook and the occasional Bonnethead Shark.  Last but certainly not least, is the fish for which Homosassa fishing is best known.  That is the tarpon.

Big Bend Offshore Fishing

Grouper, Grouper and more Grouper are what most people seek while fishing offshore of the Big Bend.  During the Spring, Summer and Fall we also enjoy King Mackerel, Spanish Mackerel, Bonita (another favorite on light tackle), Cobia (my favorite eating fish) and Barracuda.

Big Bend Fishing Species Guide

Under each fish's page, I have listed the general facts about the species, how to go fishing for it in our waters and the Florida regulations on catching it.
